The Department of Civil Engineering, Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangalore, successfully conducted a Hands-on Workshop on “Modern Surveying Using Total Station” on 8th January 2026, led by the resource person Mr. Sajith Kumar K, Senior Grade Lecturer, Vivekananda Polytechnic College. The workshop was structured in three progressive stages to ensure comprehensive learning and practical exposure for the student participants.
In the first stage, a theoretical session was conducted, where the fundamentals of modern surveying, principles of Total Station, its components, working methodology, and applications in civil engineering projects were explained in detail. This session helped students build a strong conceptual foundation.
The second stage focused on hands-on field practice, where students were taken to the ground and trained in setting up the Total Station, performing instrument calibration, taking field measurements, and understanding real-time data collection procedures. This practical exposure enhanced their confidence in handling modern surveying equipment.
In the third and final stage, the collected field data was processed using surveying software. Students were guided through data transfer, plotting, analysis, and interpretation, demonstrating how field data is converted into meaningful drawings and survey outputs used in professional practice.
Overall, the workshop effectively bridged the gap between theory, field practice, and software application, equipping students with industry-relevant skills and practical knowledge in modern surveying techniques.
