The Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Bearys Institute of Technology, successfully organized a “Zero Plastic Drive” on 27th April 2026 at Bearys Knowledge Campus, Mangalore, as part of Earth Week 2026 celebrations held from April 22 to April 29. The event was organized by the Department of AI & DS in association with BIT-ADVA and Institution’s Innovation Council with the aim of promoting environmental sustainability and reducing plastic usage within the campus.
The initiative was conducted to reduce plastic waste and maintain a clean campus environment. It also focused on creating awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics among students and staff. The program encouraged the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth bags and emphasized the importance of proper waste segregation and disposal practices.
The event commenced with a motivational and awareness session on zero plastic delivered by Dr. Mehaboob Mujawar, who highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. The drive was coordinated by Dr. Mehaboob Mujawar and Ms. Meghana R Nayak, ensuring the smooth execution of all planned activities. The program witnessed active participation from students of 4th and 6th semester AI & DS, who contributed enthusiastically to the success of the initiative.
As part of the drive, students collected plastic waste from classrooms, canteens, hostels, and surrounding areas of the campus. The collected waste was segregated for recycling and proper disposal. Cloth bags were distributed to encourage the reduction of plastic usage and promote reusable alternatives. An awareness rally was also conducted to educate students and the public about the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
The active involvement of students and faculty members reflected their strong commitment towards environmental responsibility and sustainable campus practices. The Zero Plastic Drive resulted in the collection and segregation of a significant amount of plastic waste and helped increase awareness among students regarding the dangers of plastic pollution. It also encouraged participants to adopt eco-friendly practices and promoted sustainable habits within the campus community.
The Zero Plastic Drive was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. The initiative contributed towards building a cleaner and greener campus while instilling environmental consciousness and social responsibility among students.
