The Department of Civil Engineering, Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, corganized a Social Connect and Educational Outreach Visit on December 24, 2025, with the objective of enhancing students’ awareness of social and environmental responsibility. As part of this initiative, students visited the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Waste Management Plant, Mangaluru, where they gained hands-on exposure to contemporary municipal solid waste management practices. The visit offered comprehensive insights into the entire waste management lifecycle, including source-level segregation, collection and transportation, processing, and safe disposal methods. Students observed composting techniques used for wet waste, recycling processes for dry waste, and strategies implemented to reduce dependency on landfills.Interaction with MCC officials enabled students to understand the practical challenges associated with urban waste management and the crucial role of civil engineering solutions in mitigating environmental and public health concerns. The visit also highlighted the significance of community participation, effective policy implementation, and sustainable practices in achieving efficient solid waste management systems.Overall, the outreach visit enriched students’ understanding of environmental stewardship and strengthened their ability to relate theoretical civil engineering concepts to real-world municipal infrastructure and sustainability practices.
