The Departments of Civil, Electronics and Communication, and Computer Science Engineering of Bearys Institute of Technology (BIT), Mangalore, in association with IEEE, organized the Inauguration Ceremony of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Student Branch Chapter along with the GRSS Lecture Series on 30th October 2025 at the International Seminar Hall.
The program began by seeking the blessings of the Almighty, followed by a warm welcome address and the ceremonial inauguration. The event was graced by Dr. Shyam Lal, Chair of IEEE GRSS Bangalore Chapter and Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, NITK Surathkal, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Shwetha H.R., Assistant Professor, Department of Water Resources and Ocean Engineering, NITK Surathkal, as the Guest of Honour.
In his keynote address, Dr. Shyam Lal emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary learning in solving modern engineering challenges such as climate change, sustainable infrastructure, and smart city development. He highlighted how IEEE platforms like GRSS promote collaboration, research networking, and skill development, motivating students to engage in global initiatives and adopt a multidisciplinary perspective.
The highlight of the program was a technical talk by Dr. Shwetha H.R. on “Geospatial Technologies for Water Resource Management.” She elaborated on the use of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in hydrological modeling, flood forecasting, watershed management, and groundwater mapping. Through real-world case studies, Dr. Shwetha demonstrated how geospatial technologies support sustainable water resource management and environmental decision-making. Her session provided valuable insights into modern data-driven approaches and encouraged students to explore research in geospatial and environmental engineering.
The event witnessed active participation from students and faculty across departments, fostering an environment of knowledge sharing and technical growth. The inauguration marked a major milestone for BIT, opening doors to future IEEE GRSS lectures, workshops, and research collaborations aimed at promoting innovation and sustainability in engineering education.
