Experiential Learning through Heritage and Social Responsibility: Civil Engineering Students’ Visit to Pilikula

The Department of Civil Engineering, Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, organized an Educational and Social Connect Visit on December 24, 2025, as part of the Social Connect & Responsibility (SCR) curriculum. The initiative was designed to enhance students’ awareness of social responsibility while promoting sustainable development and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Faculty members from the Civil Engineering Department accompanied the students throughout the visit, offering academic guidance and ensuring meaningful learning experiences.
During the program, students visited Pilikula Heritage Village, where they gained firsthand exposure to traditional rural life and the rich cultural legacy of Karnataka. The visit helped students understand ancient housing patterns, traditional agricultural practices, indigenous tools, and long-established customs. At the Pilikula Artisans Village, students observed skilled craftsmen engaged in age-old practices such as pottery, weaving, wood carving, and other traditional handicrafts, fostering respect for indigenous art forms and the importance of cultural conservation.
Overall, the Educational and Social Connect Visit served as a valuable experiential learning opportunity, reinforcing the department’s commitment to holistic education, community engagement, and sustainable and culturally sensitive development practices.
