On November 8, 2024, Ms. Salma Nadaf led an insightful session on the essential skills required for success in group discussions (GD), personal interviews (PI) and on Resume Building for BE First Year Students. Organized by the Department of Training and Placement, the session aimed at equipping participants with the necessary tools to excel in competitive selection processes, focusing on communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Ms. Salma emphasized that clear and confident communication is vital in both group discussions and interviews. Candidates must articulate their thoughts concisely and confidently while being mindful of body language and tone. Active listening was highlighted as an important skill, especially in group discussions, to ensure a proper understanding of others’ viewpoints. The ability to lead a discussion effectively while respecting others’ opinions was discussed as a crucial trait. Participants were encouraged to stay calm under pressure, offer constructive inputs, and steer the conversation towards productive solutions. Collaboration and team coordination were highlighted as essential elements of a successful group discussion.
Participants were advised to present themselves confidently during interviews, with attention to posture, appearance, and communication style. Ms. Salma stressed that self-assurance and the ability to stay calm in stressful situations could make a significant impact. Techniques to manage nervousness, such as deep breathing and positive self-talk, were discussed. The ability to stay composed under pressure is considered a key trait for success in interviews and group discussions.
Being well-prepared and researching topics for group discussions, as well as understanding the organization and role for interviews, were deemed essential. Ms. Nadaf encouraged participants to keep abreast of current affairs and general knowledge to engage in meaningful discussions.
The session concluded with a Q&A session where Ms. Salma addressed participant concerns and provided additional insights on improving interview and group discussion performance. The overall takeaway was that success in GDs and PIs requires a blend of communication, leadership, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.
